Cost of Living Abroad

— In short

Indicative monthly figures for rent, food and transit across the cities most-asked about by relocators. Useful for shortlisting destinations and pressure-testing a salary offer — not a substitute for a personal budget once you've narrowed your move.

How to read the numbers

City rankings change less than headlines suggest. Zurich, Singapore and the major US coastal cities have sat at the top of the global cost league for a decade; Lisbon, Berlin and Mexico City offer outsized lifestyle for the spend. The trick is to model your specific basket — rent band, school fees, healthcare, FX risk on income — rather than relying on a global index.

Three numbers tend to surprise newcomers: deposits (often 1–3 months upfront plus agent fees), health insurance for the visa stage (€600–€2,000 per person per year for the bridge before public enrolment), and the FX cost of moving income across borders (1–4% if you don't use a multi-currency rail).

Watch out

Costs newcomers under-estimate

  • Move-in costs: deposit + first month + agency fee + utility connections often equals 3–5 months' rent upfront.
  • Health bridge: private cover for the gap before public enrolment — often €50–€200/month per adult.
  • Schools: international schools €15,000–€40,000+ per year per child, plus capital fees.
  • FX & remittance: 1–4% of every cross-border transfer adds up over a year.
  • Tax: social security and double-taxation overlap can erode 5–15% of net pay if not planned.
  • Visa adviser fees: $1,500–$8,000 per primary applicant in many destinations.
